Guest Stories: Sam Dimmick

Inuit sculptor Sam Dimmick stayed with us at South Beach Place and presented his work at the 70th annual Under The Oaks art show in Vero Beach’s Riverside Park. Dimmick comes from a long line of ivory, whalebone, and stone carvers.

The Inupiat artist, who currently resides in California, creates large, finely detailed sculptures that people are encouraged to touch for an immersive visual and tactile experience.

His goal is for the audience to connect with nature by seeing and feeling the bone structure of a bear, the feathers of a bird, and the smoothness of a whale.

Sam’s sculptures can be found in museums, galleries, and personal collections around the world.

“Everything I do represents the people before me, not only in tradition but the people who took the time to teach,” Dimmick says. “I honor them with my heart every day.”
